The Revell DC-3 Douglas Dakota model aircraft kit done in 1/72nd scale

Whats inside the large Revell DC-3 Dakota model kit box. Revell kit number 4234.

The parts fitted together without gluing to test for fit.
Very good fit of major components.

The DC-3 Dakota needs no introduction to any aircraft enthusiast. If the aircraft had been paying it's N.I. contributions it could have been drawing a pension for some years now. This veteran flying machine has seen diverse application in both civilian and military ventures and is a timeless classic on a par with the Spitfire.

This Revell 1/72 scale rendition of the goonybird models the aircraft in it's civilian form. A choice of a Finnair example or an Ilmavoimat machine can be built out of the box. There is of course a huge amount of choice for modellers looking for an alternative example of DC-3 to model their particular kit after.

Moulding is done in white plastic to a high standard, very little flash is evident on my example, no perceptible sink marks were come across and there is an overall crispness to the kit.

On dry fitting the parts together an excellent level of fit is evident as is common for Revell manufactured models. No warpage is present and I'm confident this example will be a great build.
Dry fitting the parts together really shows up how big this model is. The gently swept wings span about 40cm while the length of the model Dakota is about 27cm, this will need a fair bit of display space when built.
The overall accuracy of this DC-3 looks good to me, the above dimensions are pretty much on the money for a 1/72nd scale model.

Panel lines are all recessed and look pretty good to me though are slightly heavy. The two engines are modelled in their double row form which is great whilst the clear parts are well moulded and come in a protective bag. You get a windshield and passenger windows plus some other pieces on the clear plastic sprue.

Despite it's size this DC-3 should prove a simple build project with a fairly small number of components and hardly any fiddly stuff. Great for those modellers who are tired of needing a microscope to see what they are doing.

The large decal sheet supplied with this model Dakota appears to be of good quality and looks to be in accurate register. There are some large transfers on this sheet which will require careful placement.

Here's the list of paint colours on the instruction sheet. These are from Revells own range, (current at time of writing in 2006);
  • Metallic grey, 91
  • Brick red, 37
  • Matt black, 8
  • Aluminium, 99
  • Matt grey matt, 77
  • Light grey, 371
  • Light grey matt, 75
  • Red, 330
  • Matt flesh, 35 (if you use the pilots)
  • Matt blue, 56
  • Matt green grey, 67
  • Fern Green, 360

Notes regarding this kit.
  • This DC-3 looks likely to be a re-boxing of an Italeri Dakota, but with different markings.
