Italeri Huey UH-1B helicopter kit

A look inside the box of the 1/72 Huey model helicopter kit. Model number 040.

This 1/72nd scale kit of the famous Huey is moulded in olive coloured plastic. You get two fairly large main sprues of parts plus a single clear sprue for the windscreen, windows etc. You also get a decal sheet covering three examples of the Huey, one U.S. Vietnam helicopter, a RAAF machine and a Japanese Huey.
Most of the transfers on this sheet look in good order except for some amongst the Japanese version which appear to lack a bit of colour registration accuracy.

The moulding is of excellent quality, very crisply done with virtually no sink, flash or warpage evident on my example. Surface detail is nicely implimented with lightly raised rivet detail and fine panel lines. The clear plastic parts are of notably excellent quality and come in a protective plastic bag to avoid scratching, very nice.
The rotor blades are moulded in one piece and are once again very well done.

A dry fit of the main parts shows a superb fit, the sides, roof and main windshield all fit together a treat. Everything looks good and square so this model heli should be an easy build.

The instruction sheet is clear and easy to follow with construction spread over five stages. The cockpit area is quite well detailed and comprises a moulded floor with centre console, instrument panel, detailed seats twin joysticks and collective levers plus a rear bulkhead.
The US version has rocket ordnance parts which are not used on the Japanese or RAAF helicopters.

Paints are listed in Model Master colours as follows (current as of writing in 2006);
  • Pale green, 1716
  • Olive drab, 1711
  • Flat black, 1749
  • Aircraft grey, 1731
  • Insignia white, 1745
  • Silver, 1546
  • Gun metal, 1405
  • Green, 1524
  • Red, 1503
  • Bright brass, 1782

To wind up this looks like an excellent helicopter kit which I look forward to putting together.
