Painting the Hawker Hunter jet aircraft model and final pictures

Finishing and decalling the Hawker Hunter model.

After some time building this model, the family resemblance to the Harrier is showing through.

This Hunter was finished in the standard RAF camouflage pattern of dark green and sea grey with a natural alloy underside finish.
All the paintwork on the model is Humbrol enamel paint. I used matt paint and then spayed on some satin varnish.

A Badger airbrush was used for the main camouflage colour scheme and aluminium underside. Detailing was accomplished with brush-work.
After the underside was sprayed the this was masked with tape and paper then the grey was sprayed on all over the top of the model. Maskol fluid was then applied to mask out the camo pattern, dark green then being spayed on.

That underwing store looks a bit scewed.
Darn it, I will have to teach it some manners.

The main paintwork was carried out with the canopy removed, and before the drop tanks etc had been glued on.

Before adding the decals a light coat of satin varnish was applied all over the model plane. The standard kit decals then went on very easily and produced what I think is a good looking job. When fully decalled some more satin varnish was sprayed over the entire model.
Finally the canopy was glued in place with PVA so I could remove it easily if neccessary and the underwing stores were glued on. This later stage proved tricky, the pylons required trimming to get the tanks level (not sure about the correct angle required for these and may have messed up here!) which meant manually aligning them without guidance pins. Also when glued on with cement the local paintwork took a hit. In the finish, after plenty of perseverance, the job was done to my satisfaction (almost). If doing again I would PVA them in place. The probe and antenna were glued on, finishing off the Hunter.

Real good looking aircraft, the Hunter.

Another one for the cabinet.

This build of the Airfix Hunter has been an interesting if sometimes difficult experience. The nose and wing were modified as previously described, this work adding a lot of extra effort to the build. In the finish though I am pleased with this Hawker Hunter model.

The finished plane looks like a Hawker Hunter so I must have got the nose something like.
