Corsair F4U-5 revell 1/72 plastic kit check out

This article takes an in the box look at the excellent Revell 1/72 scale corsair F4U-5 kit.

This kit of the famous Corsair 'bent wing bird' is modelled by (or at least boxed by in this case) Revell to their usual high standards. In fact this is a well done kit surpassing most of their earlier works, kits just keep getting better.
In the kit you get two main sprues of components, a third small clear plastic sprue with the two piece canopy, some decals and instructions.
Plastic used is a medium/dark blue polystyrene which appears of medium strength and hardness, easy to cut and a bit stronger than the Airfix blue/grey plastic of yesteryear. The colour is a fair approximation to the paint the model will eventually be sprayed in.

This Corsair features some superb recessed panel detail which are all finely done. The lower wing surface is in one piece forming the famous inverted gull shape, the upper surfaces are in separate halves. The wing has some nice detail in the wheel bays and is extremely well done.

Moving on to the main fuselage mouldings. This is the usual two part deal with the fin moulded into both halves. Nice to see the fin set at the offset as it should be. These halves fit together very well and have good detail.
Overal moulding quality of these Corsair main parts is great with virtually no flash or sink that I can detect in this example of the kit.

Fitting the fuselage and wings together proves this Corsair will be an easy build without much need for filler. The components fit nearly perfectly. I assembled these parts dry and could move the model about in one piece even before taping for the picture.
Tail surfaces fit equally well with different sized slots to make sure the halves get glued to the correct sides. One slightly odd thing I've come across with this kit is the circular markings on the tail. When assembled one half has them underneath while the other has them top-side, not sure about this but it's a miniscule detail.

A nose ring fits onto this assembly and also fits well, as does the two piece canopy. A note worthy of mention is the way Revell package their clear parts in separate plastic bags, this saving them from rattling around getting scratched. Well done Revell, other manufacturers please take note.

The Corsair's double wasp radial engine is modelled with a single moulding. This makes a good represention of the full size bohemoth of a motor but isn't as good as Revells own work in their superb P-47 Thunderbolt kit which models the same powerplant in two separate rows.
The massive four bladed Corsair propellor is once again well done with just a hint of moulding flash on the blades which is easily removed with a blade. The undercarriage is well detailed and the wheels are two piece detailed mouldings which require joining.

Revell have made a great cockpit for this model. A detailed base moulding to which is fitted a seat, stick and instrument panel all of which are fine work for this scale of model. No real need to go hunting down after market parts with this kit unless you are real keen.

Decals look to be excellent but I haven't yet applied them so cannot comment on how they go on until later (UPDATE: They went on well but care was needed to avoid silvering, Klear took care of this). The markings allow the construction of a Marine or Navy Corsair.

Overall dimensional accuracy of this model appears high (not counting the nose length. The mouldings capture the unique bulky lines of the Corsair even when taped together.

That's about it for this quick look inside the box of Revell's 1/72nd Corsair model aircraft. I will shortly be building this kit so more details coming ASAP.

Some observations regarding this kit.
  • The model appears to be a re-boxing of an Italeri kit for a nightfighter variant (one sprue has unused radome parts).
  • The nose length on this Corsair looks slighty shorter than it should for a F4U-5. I believe there is an aftermarket part which can be used to sort this out if required.
