Kyosho Caliber 30 radio control helicopter model
Building the Caliber 30 RC model helicopter.
The Caliber 30 model heli is one of the latest radio control helicopters to come from the well known and respected Japanese Kyosho model manufacturer.
As with most model helicopters of late it comes with the main assemblies factory pre-assembled. All that the modeller is required to do is install the engine, attach the tail boom and drive belt, mount the radio control and finish off the
smart plastic canopy.
All this work can be done in a couple of evenings relaxed building. The biggest job is putting on the stickers and finishing the canopy.

The two pictures above show the sub assemblies of the Caliber as they come from the box. The left picture shows the main mechanics of the model heli, while at right is the tail boom with tail rotor drive pre attached together with the clutch, silencer, rotor blades and sundry other parts required to finish the Caliber.
All of these assemblies and parts are of excellent quality and well put together. It always pays to check pre assembled models though in case of the odd loose screw etc.
This being a Caliber 30 it should come as no surprise that an engine in the 30-38 size range is needed to power the helicopter. For this model I chose a Russian built MDS 38 ABC heli engine.

The first job when putting this heli together is attaching the centrifugal clutch to the engine. This is always an important job with a radio control helicopter which has to be done right. Threadlock needs to be used while attaching this and it must be tightened well without damaging the engine. To accomplish this you need a special tool to lock the engine which doesn't come with the kit, so make sure you buy one while you're at the model shop :-) , it beats shoving wood down the exhaust ;-(
